It can operate using various serial data transmission techniques, including IBM "bi-sync". The TD8255A-5 serves as a peripheral device that is programmable by the CPU. It converts parallel data characters into a continuous serial data stream for transmission and vice versa, allowing for seamless data transfer between the CPU and external devices. Additionally, the USART provides real-time status updates to the CPU, including data transmission errors and control signals such as SYNDET and TxEMPTY.
