Application of Ceramic Resonators in Electronic Products

This article provides an overview of ceramic resonators, including what they are and their classification. Ceramic resonators, also known as "resonators," are piezoelectric ceramic devices used to generate oscillations at specific frequencies. The materials used to manufacture these devices exhibit resonant properties during the production process. However, the resonant properties are within the production error range, and their quality factor is much lower than that of quartz, resulting in less frequency stability than crystal resonators.

What are Ceramic Resonators?

Ceramic resonators are piezoelectric ceramic components, also known as piezoelectric ceramic crystal oscillators. They are similar to quartz crystal oscillators in that they can convert electrical energy into mechanical energy and vice versa. When the frequency of the applied AC electric field and the resonant frequency of the resonator coincide, the conversion of electrical and mechanical energy occurs at the resonant frequency of the resonator. Ceramic resonators are highly sensitive to the frequency of the excitation signal and are designed to work with various ICs.

Classification of Ceramic Resonators:

Ceramic resonators can be classified based on their pin configuration as either surface mount or through-hole. They have a wide range of applications, including low-frequency kilohertz ceramic resonators, as well as megahertz range ceramic resonators for mid and high frequencies. For example, the frequency of the CRB455E resonator is 455 kHz, while the CRB1.2M resonator has a frequency of 1.2 MHz.

Since ceramic resonators are designed to work with various ICs, the startup oscillation is designed based on the specific IC used. Common ICs include 1/6CD4069UBEX2 and TC74HCUO4P series. In most microprocessor applications, ceramic resonators are used as timing elements.

Applications:

Ceramic resonators are increasingly being used in electronic products and communication equipment due to their high stability, no adjustment required, small size, and low cost.

Conclusion:

Ceramic resonators are piezoelectric ceramic devices used to generate oscillations at specific frequencies. They are highly sensitive to the frequency of the excitation signal and are designed to work with various ICs. They have a wide range of applications, including low-frequency kilohertz ceramic resonators, as well as megahertz range ceramic resonators for mid and high frequencies. Ceramic resonators are increasingly being used in electronic products and communication equipment due to their high stability, no adjustment required, small size, and low cost.
