The VHCT138A is an advanced, high-speed CMOS 3-8 decoder manufactured in a silicon gate CMOS process. It achieves high operating speeds comparable to equivalent bipolar Schottky TTLs while maintaining low CMOS power consumption. When the device is enabled, the three binary select inputs (A0, A1, and A2) determine which output (O#0-O#7) will go low. When the enable input E3 is held low, or E#1 or E#2 is held high, decoding is disabled and all outputs are turned high. inputs E3, E#1, and E#2 are used to simplify cascade linking and as address decoders for the memory system. Protection circuits ensure that 0V to 7V is applied to the input pins regardless of the supply voltage and output pins at VCC = 0V. These circuits prevent damage to the device due to mismatched supply and input/output voltages. The device can be used as an interface between a 3V system and a 5V system and between two power supply systems, such as a battery backup.
