Description

The SM712 transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diode is designed for protecting asymmetrical (12V to -7V) data transfer systems in RS-485 multi-point applications. It is used to shield devices from transient voltage surges generated by electrostatic discharge (ESD), electrical fast transients (EFT), and lightning.

The SM712 is capable of handling over 500 Watts (tp = 8/20 s) of power, which makes it ideal for extended commom mode applications with high surge voltage levels.

The integrated design of the SM712 includes two 12V and two 7V TVS diodes in a single package, which reduces the need for independent components and helps to minimize voltage overshoot caused by trace inductance. The low clamping voltage of the SM7 12 also reduces stress on the shielded transceiver, improving equipment reliability.
