SMA is a type of RF connector also known as SubMiniature version A, that was developed in the 1960s. Its interface utilizes a threaded connection. SMA connectors come in 50-ohm semi-precision subminiature units which provide exceptional electrical performance ranging from DC to 18 GHz. These high performing connectors offer outstanding mechanical durability with their compact size.
SMA connectors are utilized in phase array radar, ILS landing systems, test equipment, and other instrumentation that use phase matching techniques. These connectors make use of semi-rigid coaxial cables and SMA Plug-to-Jack adapters to offer precise and straightforward ways of phase adjustments for microwave devices. SMA connectors are available in both standard and reverse polarity versions. Reverse polarity is utilized as a keying system achieved with a reverse interface. It ensures that reverse polarity interface connectors do not mate with standard interface connectors. To accomplish this, Amphenol inserts female contacts in plugs and male contacts in jacks.
