Description
The SM712 transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diode is intended for asymmetrical (12V to -7V) protection in RS -485 multi-point data transfer systems. The SM712 can shield devices from transient voltages caused by electrostatic discharge (ESD), electrical fast transients (EFT), and lightning.
The SM712 has a power handling capability of more than 500 Watts (tp = 8/20 s) to accommodate the greater transient voltage levels that may be expected in extended commom mode applications. This improves equipment reliability and reduces the need for "guess work" when employing Zener diodes that are not qualified to handle such abrupt situations.
By combining two 12V and two 7V TVS diodes in a single package, the SM712 removes four independent components. The integrated design helps to reduce voltage overshoot caused by trace inductance. The SM7 12's low clamping voltage reduces stress on the shielded transceiver.
